Every Labrador should master these 5 basic commands. They are the foundation of harmonious living and your dog’s safety.

1. Sit

How to teach it:

  1. Hold a treat over the dog’s nose
  2. Move slowly backward over their head
  3. When they sit naturally, say “Sit” and reward
  4. Repeat 5-10 times per session

2. Down

Prerequisite: First master “Sit”

  1. From sitting, move the treat toward the floor
  2. Slide forward so they lie down
  3. Say “Down” when they complete the position

3. Stay

Start with short duration:

  1. Ask for “Sit”
  2. Show palm and say “Stay”
  3. Count to 3, reward
  4. Gradually increase time and distance

4. Come (Recall)

The command that can save their life:

  1. Use a long leash at first
  2. Say “[Name], come!” with enthusiasm
  3. Gently pull if they don’t respond
  4. Always reward when they arrive (never punish)

5. Heel

For walks without pulling:

  1. Keep treats in your left hand
  2. Walk and reward when they’re at your side
  3. If they pull, stop and wait for them to return

General Tips

  • Short sessions (5-10 minutes), several times a day
  • Always end on a positive note
  • Use high-value treats
  • Be consistent with the words you use
