Basic Training: The 5 Essential Commands
Master the 5 fundamental commands to train your Labrador: sit, down, stay, come, and heel.

Every Labrador should master these 5 basic commands. They are the foundation of harmonious living and your dog’s safety.
1. Sit
How to teach it:
- Hold a treat over the dog’s nose
- Move slowly backward over their head
- When they sit naturally, say “Sit” and reward
- Repeat 5-10 times per session
2. Down
Prerequisite: First master “Sit”
- From sitting, move the treat toward the floor
- Slide forward so they lie down
- Say “Down” when they complete the position
3. Stay
Start with short duration:
- Ask for “Sit”
- Show palm and say “Stay”
- Count to 3, reward
- Gradually increase time and distance
4. Come (Recall)
The command that can save their life:
- Use a long leash at first
- Say “[Name], come!” with enthusiasm
- Gently pull if they don’t respond
- Always reward when they arrive (never punish)
5. Heel
For walks without pulling:
- Keep treats in your left hand
- Walk and reward when they’re at your side
- If they pull, stop and wait for them to return

- Short sessions (5-10 minutes), several times a day
- Always end on a positive note
- Use high-value treats
